I have a problem, well, at least my mother does. I am a 14 year old girl who just likes being me. I dress the way I want to dress within school dress code rules. The problem is that my mother hates the way I want to dress and she yells at me and scolds me like a 5 year old child. I am an honors student, i play three sports, I have an active social life, and I'm happy being myself. My mother says that if i dress the way I do, I will never get anywhere, but I know I won't dress like a punk when I'm an adult, but right now i'm just a kid, and a very happy one at that. Should I yeild to my mother and take the trip to abercrombie and fitch, or just be me? Please help. -Just being me ANSWER There's nothing I hate more than parents doingwhat they think is 'best for their kid.' A kid who issmart, which it sounds like you are, knows what's bestfor herself. If she wants to ruin your childhood thenyou can let her know when you grow up and stick her inthe worst old folks home there is. But I say a kidneeds to express herself when she's a kid as long asshe know's what she's doing and she's happy. I myselfstill wear clothes that don't match on purpose and I'mhappy. Never give in to Crapercrombie!

It is granted that some people are full of empathy, sympathy and compassion towards thier peers. However, others seem to feel hatred towards other, void of any feelins of compassion towards any other than themselves. So we ask of you, are feelings of compassion towards others innate to humans, or is compassion a learned trait from one's enviroment? Discounting love (family/maternal and sensual) due to association or chemical. We define compassion as a feeling of the humane quality of understanding the suffering of others and a will to do something about it. What is your opinion on this subject? -sie und/et elle ANSWER Being human, we should have compassion towardseach other. If someone is in trouble it seems it isin our nature to help them. I believe that it isinnate. That a normal human being, without anychemical imbalances or psychological problems wouldhelp someone who was suffering. We are also taught tobe compassionate to our fellow man and not to ourenemies. They are only our enemies because someonetold us this though, because we are both equal andshouldn't fight in the first place.

My male roommate and I recently had a philisophical debate about leaving the toilet seat up. I like it down, since I'm a girl and we kind of have to sit to pee; he of course likes it up because he doesn't have to care. His point was that he was conserving his energy by not putting the seat down and that it is human nature to try and conserve energy because that helps us survive when we have to out run some predator or some such thing. He can't help it, it's biology, he's been conditioned through thousands of years to act this way. Is there a fallacy in his logic? How can I prove him wrong and get him to put the seat down? I don't really care if the seat is up or down so much as I want to prove him wrong. He's quite the arrogant bastard and I can't use sex to get him to do what I want. I won't sleep with him. So the toilet seat remains up and I'm not getting any. why am I living with this guy? -Sarah (pissed off roomie) ANSWER This is exactly what I like: proving peoplewrong! I'll admit he has a slight point about beingconditioned through thousands of years of using thetoilet, but I'll have to disagree with leaving theseat up for thousands of years. Does he not rememberwhen men were noble and treated women with respect? Aman who honored, or at least respected, the woman helives with would put the seat down to prove he's agentleman. And besides, don't just put the seat down, put the lid down too. What if you drop yourtoothbrush above the toilet? With the lid down it willjust bounce off, but if the lid and seat are up...
