Who invented the in sink garbage disposal. Why was it invented, and for what purpose.

ANSWER
The purpose of the garbage disposal should be fairly clear, even to the layman. It grinds up food so that it goes down the drain easily. John Hammes invented the garbage disposal unit in 1927 and is also the founder of the company In-Sink-Erator. They make the most popular/most commonly used brand of garbage disposal units.
